The Biology of Inherited Trauma: What Epigenetics Reveals

Epigenetics is the scientific study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work.Unlike mutations, epigenetic changes are reversible and do not change your DNA sequence. However, they can dictate which genes are turned "on" or "off." When it comes to inherited trauma and how it physically triggers autoimmune diseases, the connection works through specific biological mechanisms:

The Stress Blueprint
When an ancestor experiences a massive, life-altering trauma—such as Joe's great-grandmother, Terviz Darakjian, surviving the 1915 Armenian Genocide after losing her husband and eight children—their body goes into extreme, prolonged survival mode. This floods their system with stress hormones like cortisol, causing cellular-level shifts to survive the crisis.
Passing Down the "On" Switch
These intense molecular alterations can actually leave chemical tags on the DNA in sperm or egg cells. While the trauma itself isn't written into the genetic code, the high-alert survival response to that trauma is effectively copy-pasted into the next generations.
The Autoimmune Trigger
Because of these inherited tags, descendants can be born with a nervous system and immune system that are highly hypersensitive or genetically "pre-primed" for defense. If a descendant later encounters a modern environmental stressor (like high stress, a viral infection, or toxicity), their immune system can radically overreact.
